Wire gauge - Wire gauge is a measurement of how large a wire is, either in diameter or cross-sectional area. This determines the amount of electrical current a wire can safely carry, as well as its electrical resistance and weight per unit of length.
Imperial Wire Gauge & British Standard Gauge - British Standard, or Imperial wire gauge, fixed by order of council August 23 1883. It was constructed by improving the Birmingham Wire Gauge.
American wire gauge - American wire gauge (AWG) is used in the United States and other countries as a standard method of denoting wire diameter, especially for nonferrous, electrically conducting wire. Increasing gauge numbers give decreasing wire diameters, which is similar to many other non-metric gauging systems.
Birmingham Wire Gauge Company - The Birmingham Wire Gauge Company was the main provider of piano wire in Britain in the early to mid 1800s. Their wire, noted for its strength and resilience, was stronger than the easily available German wire gauge.

Thomson Delmar Learning is pleased to make this one-of-a-kind reference - containing the most widely accepted and most frequently used criteria for electrical installations in the U.S. - available directly from us for our customers who work in and around the electrical trades. "Off the grid" electrical wiring is often configured to carry direct current. In addition to new construction, additions or major modifications must follow the latest code. that offers insights into new and more difficult articles in order to guide users to success in interpreting and applying current Code requirements to all types of electrical installations. For instance, 12 gauge wire (thicker than 12 gauge). In European countries, this means alternating current at 60 Hz, with 120 volts nominal. Electrical Wiring Residential is a trusted resource for anyone involved in electrical design, installation and inspection, the NEC. Produced by the NFPA, the popular National Electrical Code specifies acceptable wiring methods and materials in the U.S. - available directly from us for our customers who work in and around the electrical trades.
